What's New – August 2007

Here's the latest news from WCYSB:

Ø       Cityscape will benefit from a P.E.P. (Physical Education Program) grant at Barre City Elementary/Middle School!  Barre City Elementary/Middle School has received a three-year Physical Education Program (P.E.P.) grant from the Carol White Program through the U.S. Department of Education to improve youths’ fitness levels through increased exercise and better nutrition.  Youth in Cityscape will benefit from this grant by participating in a variety of fitness-based activities throughout the school year.

§          The goal of P.E.P. is to get each middle school student to exercise for 225 minutes weekly. The program will include the purchase of training and equipment, such as: heart rate & body fat monitors; fitness tracking software; blood pressure cuffs; Olympic weight lifting equipment; a traversing wall (akin to rock climbing); inline skates, and a cutting-edge, computerized, aerobic-dance system (Dance Dance Revolution, also known as “DDR”).

§          P.J. LaPerle, Cityscape Coordinator, and Jay Baitz, P.E. Teacher at the school, are collaborating to implement the P.E.P.  The School’s Wellness Committee, cafeteria staff, and teachers will be involved.  Other community partners, such as the Barre Recreation Department and Food Works, will also help implement the program.

Ø       Drug & Alcohol Counselors are introducing health & wellness components into clients’ treatment.  In addition to counseling, clients are encouraged to exercise and are supported as they incorporate fitness into their daily routines.  They are also given suggestions to improve their eating habits.

Ø       Basement Teen Center revamped!  George Karpoff became the Basement’s Unit Director in spring, and a two new AmeriCorps members will come on board in the fall to serve as Supervisors.  Also, the Basement now has high-speed internet, cable TV and upgraded furniture for teens to enjoy during out-of-school time.  There’s never been a better time to hang out at the Basement!

Ø       Cityscape youth have enjoyed a summer packed with activities.

§          Cityscape youth participated in field trips to Morse Farm and the Echo Center; “Surf & Turf” (hiking & swimming); “Readers Digest(ing)” (a reading group), and Group Games, such as Tug of War and the “Human Knot”.
